Working From Home Can Be Both A Blessing And A Curse

No commute. Blend your work and family life without bringing it crumbling down around your ears. Etcetera, etcetera. What you might have missed however, is the fact that there are two sides to every story. If you’re stepping out into the wide, wonderful world of working from home believing that you’re stumbling into an unprecedented paradise, you’re sadly mistaken-and, if you’re not ready for it, could find yourself floundering before you’ve even had a chance to begin.
The Good Points
A major blessing to working from home is that you can work in whatever room you want, in whatever clothing you choose to wear, if any, and earn your income on your own schedule. Your environment is a comfort zone for you and you don’t have to deal with annoying co-workers and the inevitable office politics of a conventional office.
Particularly if there are small children in your house, your life and work balance can be handled far better when working from home. You can feel that sense of achievement of earning a living while not going into panic mode whenever one of the kids gets sick or has a day off from school. Your schedule is flexible enough that you can take you or your kids to a doctor’s appointment without having to tell anyone at work that you will be away for a few hours. For that matter, you can take the day off and hit the beach without making any excuses to anyone. You can play catch up later with your work when the kids are in bed for the night.
Not
Working out of your home means just that - working. You are not a stay at home parent or a person on permanent vacation. Your time is not your own if you hope to be successful at what you do, whether at home or in an office.
You are doing this because you have to work to support you and your family.
You will have many friends and acquaintances that ignore you are working simply because you are at home. You will be called upon to babysit during the day. People will drop by for coffee in the morning and stay through lunch. You will be invited to all sorts of events that take place during the day. No one will believe you when you tell them you can’t go because you have to work. “Work? But you’re home”!
It took a long time for me to stop answering my phone during the day, even though I knew that every time it rang it was going to be somebody else wanting me to come do something that was going to leave me sitting there hunched over my desk until midnight. Then there’s the part where if it wasn’t something outside the house distracting me from what I needed to do, it was something inside.
There are kids, laundry, floors that need vacuuming, cats, canaries, gerbils…all demanding your attention. It is very difficult to block out such things and concentrate on your work. This can leave you just as torn between work responsibilities and family responsibilities as working outside the home can do.
Then there’s the part where the laptop calls my name at all hours of the day and night when I have a pile of work to do, leaving me working just as many seven day workweeks as not. Some days, you just can’t win. So let me break it down like this. Working from home is amazing. Incredible. Just make sure you’re walking into this one with your eyes wide open.
