They have started to gain popularity among people who used to prefer the traditional gold and silver jewelry. However, some people may still not be very familiar with this new material.
Tungsten rings are made out of tungsten carbide, a type of metal discovered by Carl Wilhelm Scheele in 1781. The metal appears to be a tough steel-gray found on many different ores such as wolframite and scheelite. Its many uses weren’t discovered until the twentieth century, which include mining and mechanical applications, from light bulbs to x-ray tubes and even as a piece of jewelry.
The Germans previously used tungsten as a replacement for diamonds in cutting and milling steel and iron. They discovered that when it was combined with different metals like titanium, it becomes tougher.
During the Second World War, the metal even gained popularity because of its use for making weaponry. And since both warring factions were intent on inflicted the worst possible damage on the other, they needed something strong that can add power to their weapons. Tungsten provided the solution.
Tungsten continued to become popular in mining, mechanical and weaponry. But it was not until the metal was combined with cobalt when the world saw another potential use for this element. The result created a tough, shiny metal, and ideal material for making jewelry.
Tungsten was then used to make rings. Tungsten rings are very hard; you won’t be able to bend or break it easily. It also has the ability to retain its own shine, so you don’t need to clean it often. But even though it is considered as a very tough material, it is easily removed in times of emergencies.
Jewelers now think this is a very good material to use in their creations because of its strength. It will not easily yield to scratches, bends, and pressure. It also has the ability to fight rust and retain its natural shine, so constant cleaning is not required.
Tungsten rings are great accessories not only because of its very interesting history. Just look at the bands and see its unique beauty. It’s time to veer away from the traditional pieces of jewelry. It’s time for innovation and change. Plus, these rings are more practical compared to gold and silver pieces.
