It took a long time but electric autos are finally available on the mass market. The two most talked about models are the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt. In order for these vehicles to really take off there needs to be many more charging stations installed across the nation so people can easily recharge; stations should ideally be as prevalent as regular fuel stations. However, home charging stations are also available at an extra cost; these stations allow quick and convenient charging.
The electric grid needs to be upgraded so that it can take on the thousands or even millions of electric cars some people expect to be on the road someday. Moreover, major cities are locating charging stations in parking lots and parking structures, in malls and in other locations where people frequent, but as of now, there are not enough of them.
The issue of range is another one that is worrisome for a lot of drivers. The Leaf has a range of around one hundred miles which isn’t so practical if you drive a lot or have a really long commute. Since the true 100 percent electric car relies on a fully charged battery to travel, there are potential buyers of the car that are holding back because they are afraid that they might get stranded when their battery runs out.
The Volt is a bit different and has an advantage over the Leaf because it is also equipped with a traditional motor that kicks in on an as needed basis. The engine works a generator so that the vehicle can keep on running at all times. Most electric cars do have a range restriction.
One standout electric vehicle which stands out from the rest due to its performance and exotic looks is the Karma which is produced by Fisker. This pure electric car has two driving modes — Stealth and Sport. Most hybrids aren’t too keen on speed but the Fisker can reach speeds of up to ninety five miles an hour; pretty darn fast! The sports mode is even faster and goes from 0-60 in a mere 5.9 seconds. All this doesn’t come cheap; pricing starts at around the eighty thousand dollar range.
