“No other man-made device since the shields and lances of the ancient knights fulfills a man’s ego like an automobile” said Sir William. And Herbert Marcuse later added to that “The people recognize themselves in their commodities; they find their soul in their automobile, hi-fi set, split-level home, kitchen equipment.” These two are fine brokers of words and reveal some of the characteristics of cars, but this article’s intent is to zero in on vehicle brokering not word brokering.

As with so many useful inventions, the invention of the car was seen as a luxurious plaything of the rich, certainly not a serious every day means of transportations for billions of people around the world as it is today. The automobile is not only a necessity of life for many, it also can be a status symbol, a business, a hobby or a passion. Many of us today could not fathom what living without a personal auto would be like. Our cars not only get us to jobs, friends, and entertainment venues, they represent to us freedom in our way of life.

The most apparent advantage of buying a second hand vehicle is the capital cost savings. As the cost of second vehicles continue to go down, while brand new ones continue to rise, the decision to choose the former becomes easier. These days, it is no longer uncommon to find used cars under 5,000 USD, even under 3,000 USD. Looking for the best used cars under 3,000 USD would require a lot of time and patience on your part; then again, if you do come across one, it makes all your effort worthwhile. The easiest way to look for used cars under 5,000 dollars would be through the Internet. There are three ways on how you can get these previously owned cars under 5,000 and these are through private sellers, used-car dealers, and manufacturers with CPO cars. If you’re looking for the best used cars under 3,000 USD, your best bet would be through auto auctions.
Many are leery about buying those pre-owned cars under 5,000 dollars, probably even more reluctant when offered a car under 3,000 dollars. Such sentiment is not misguided because stories of people ending up with lemons, cars that are welded from two or more wrecked cars, cloned, involved in an accident, or waterlogged are not exactly uncommon.
Still, while those risks are ever-present there are ways on how to prevent those scenarios from happening to you. First, examine the car yourself using an inspection checklist, which is very much available online. Also, do not inspect the car under the rain, or in poor light conditions, like at nighttime. If you intend to get a car from a private party, insist on seeing the unit at their house. Instead, view it at their residence, and in daylight. Whether you are getting it from a dealership or from a private seller, it is always a wise decision to bring along a professional mechanic so you can get some expert opinion and not swayed by a sweet-talking salesman. Also, you have to test drive the car on various conditions. You have to check as well how the car performs in other conditions, for instance, try driving on a slope or on a busy highway where you have to stop and go after every few minutes to see if it balks.
Also, it is imperative that you learn as much as you can about the car’s history. Do not forget as well to request for maintenance records from the dealer or the one selling the car. Find out if the car has been damaged in a flood, involved in a collision, have been declared as a lemon, or had its odometer rolled back. You have two options to do this. One is through the National Insurance Crime Bureau which provides their services for free, or through the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System which will generate a Vehicle History Report for a small amount. As you would expect, the former, being a paid-service provides a more extensive report.
Moreover, make sure you check if the dealership or the individual is selling the used car to you at a reasonable price. Used car valuation tools from the National Automobile Dealer Association and the Kelley Blue Book can be found online. Second-hand vehicle purchases can be settled in cash or credit. In the long run, the latter would cost you more because you have to pay for the cost of credit. Also, when making a budget, you have to take into account not only the price of the car itself, but also the insurance coverage you would have to buy, taxes and repairs you have to pay for.
Nowadays, it’s possible to get used cars under 5000 USD. You can even get one for less than 3 grand. If you are interested in getting the best used cars under 3000, or cars under $5,000, read our helpful tips here, first.

Used cars under 5,000 dollars are truly a bargain, however if you do not visually inspect them, take them for a test drive, or review its maintenance record beforehand, you may end up paying more for frequent repairs. At the same time, not doing so can put you in real danger as some of these cars are made to look excellent externally but are unreliable internally. Learning about the vehicle’s problems while you’re running at seventy miles per hour can be a real pain, sometimes in a literal sense.
