It is a toss-up whether the world’s favourite way of staying fit is walking or swimming, but simply because not everyone has access to enough safe water to swim in. I think that hiking is fine, but we do it every day, it is too normal; swimming, on the other hand, launches you into a totally different world where you need a different set of skills to survive.

However, the earliest written references to swimming are from about 2000 BC, but people must have been bathing, swimming and fishing long before that.

Millions of people give garden parties every year, but pool parties are even better. You probably have been to a pool bar in a hotel on holiday where one of the bars faces onto the water and there are seats in the water, normally totally submerged so that the drinkers can sit at the bar in the water and enjoy their drink. I am reminded why being a California resident is so desirable now that the dreary, damp days of winter have been replaced by the mild temperatures of spring . Vibrant green grass and patches of poppies cloak the hillsides. Our beaches are impeccably clean and belong to the locals while they are still too chilly for water sport seeking tourists. The peachy-pink sunsets and velvet blue night skies blend into our majestic mountains in the distance.. It really is beautiful countryside.
