Individuals tend to think of martial arts as being oriental, Kung Fu sort fighting. However, the word ‘martial’ derives from the Latin word ‘mars, martis’, who was the Roman god of war. ‘Martial’, consequently, means ‘to do with war or fighting’. As a result, martial can refer to Western ways of fighting too such as boxing and wrestling.

In competitive combat, it is normal for both fighters in the ring to be using the same martial art, be it sumo, boxing or karate. Both fighters will have spent years studying the same techniques and adapting them to suit themselves, but what would happen if a wrestler were matched with a karate fighter?

Everyone knows that you have to train to learn how to do something better. This goes for reading, writing, playing chess and martial arts. Especially in combative sports like martial arts, because you can get hurt, if you are not more proficient than your opponent. The most ferocious form of martial art is mixed martial arts.

Mixed martial arts is hugely well-liked now. It is as popular as wrestling was in the Seventies and Eighties. The difference is that everybody knew that wrestling was choreographed, whereas mixed martial arts (some fans call it cage fighting) is not. Aikido is among the oldest form of martial arts. Founded by Morihei Ueshiba, this form of martial artscame about by means of the studies of quite a few diverse kinds of standard martial arts. Archery fishing is also called bow fishing and it is as ancient as the bow and arrow themselves. We in the West tend to think that only poorer tribesmen in Third World countries go bow fishing, but that is not quite true.
