Eminem’s background is of modest origins and paved the way for the rapper to turn his frustrations with life into his music. Now a multi-millionaire, and famous the world over, it would be interesting to take a look at where he came from and what made him what he is today.
The talent of Eminem was made possible by his mother Debbie who gave birth to him at age 15. He was born on the 17th of October 1972 in St. Joseph MO. His battles started early as his father left him and his mother when he was just six months old. This perhaps sparked a childhood of trying to find an identity and somewhere where he was accepted. He moved various times with his mother at a young age, eventually settling in Detroit. In fact he only spent a maximum of 3 months in one place so no wonder he felt excluded and found it hard to fit in. With so many new schools to get used to he ultimately found it impossible to make lasting friendships.
Moving from Kansas City to Detroit was to make it rather impossible for him to make friends with any of his peers as he was not in one place long enough. He always seemed to be bullied as the new kid and this made it hard for him to make any kind of meaningful friendship. The rejection that he felt by the abandonment of his father was only to be exacerbated by the rejection of his peers and the school system. To cope with this Eminem focused all of his energy into his music and his anger found a positive outlet.
From the age of 4 in fact it was obvious that the young Marshall was different to other children of his age. He was often seen putting words together that rhymed and had a good grasp of language. Although he came to leave school in ninth grade with no qualifications, his intelligence was clear for all to see. He preferred to spend his school life as a platform to practice free-styling with other kids. He left school at 14 to pursue his rapping passion and concentrate on making it big as an artist.
When he was 17 years old he began to carve out an identity for himself. By combining the first and last letters of his name, Eminem was cultivated and his image of an angry young white kid soon started to make waves on the local scene. However, not everything was as easy for him as first appears. He found it almost impossible to make it into the black rapping scene or get any respect for his music, merely because he was white. This frustrated him all the more and left him feeling rejected again. He then used this anger and poured it into his lyrics again, determined to prove everyone wrong and burst onto the scene despite his colour.
Aware that the road to stardom was not going to plain sailing Eminem began to fight for recognition, fighting for air time on radio shows and entering himself into numerous freestyle battles to prove his talent. This led him to be able to get is first album recorded but unfortunately “Infinite” only sold 1,000 copies. Although all vital for his experience, it was not until 2007 that Eminem would make a real name for himself.
By 1997 had a child and was married, so his need to earn money and be successful was all the more powerful. To help him he entered the Rap Olympics, hoping to scoop the $1,500 first prize, but when he came second he was furious. All was not lost however as the young Eminem soon discovered that there were talent scouts from Interscope records in the audience. He managed to track them down and gave them a copy of his first album to see what they thought. This album ended up in the hands of Dr. Dre who was impresses by his skill and lyrics. He then contacted Eminem and they both got together to work on Eminem’s second album “The Slim Shady LP”. This was the album that was to catapult him into the limelight and set the tone for his style of angry aggressive lyrics. It was a unique style that was different to everything that was going on at the time, so the shock value had a lot to do with the publicity it gained.
In a relatively short period he has managed to pull off 3 grammy awards, an Academy award and numerous other accolades for his work. He continues to grow in popularity and push the boundaries of the world of music, all whilst maintaining a down to earth and modest approach.
So this is basically how it all started for Eminem. In the short time that he has been famous he has managed to achieve a lot and his success is not to be undermined. He came from nothing and with sheer determination and hard work he did manage to prove everyone wrong. His success only seems to be getting bigger and better and who knows what is next in store for this artist. All we know is that it will be a surprise and even more impressive than what we have come to expect from him thus far.
