We decided once and for all that the extra pounds had to go, so drew up a list of how we wanted to live, and why. To be honest, we weren’t looking for much. For Katie, it was all about the kids - being able to get in and play with them. And she wanted to get rid of feeling self-conscious in her underwear.
Predominantly for me it was about buying stylish off-the-peg clothes again, instead of the dreary ageing ranges available for ‘over size’ people. We have a 3 storey townhouse, and I wanted to run up the stairs without panting by the top floor!
Going through this process revealed that how we perceive ourselves is a key factor in how we actually look. Sorry to say that as we get heavier, our self regards plummets. Most overweight adults believe that being slimmer will restore their happiness. We’d like to offer some of our insights, as we can absolutely identify with this assumption.
Medical research tells us that our sub conscious mind has no scope to differentiate between actual reality, and perceived reality. And so our conscious mind receives its most predominant thoughts - real or not real. Repeat a concept often enough and that surfaces as the overriding idea.
Just how long have we been re-affirming the concept of how fat we are? So instead of telling our subconscious what we don’t want, we should tell it what we DO want.
It’s also important to think about all the great things being slimmer will mean. And so each of us thought of activities and things that would be enhanced by being slimmer. We came up with - Going for walks in the country, flirting, great sex, going for a swim without embarrassment, playing with the kids, fun on the beach, dancing, cycling and greater happiness.
Then we envisioned ourselves in cool summer clothes, looking great as we enjoyed trips to the beach. Everyone approved of our good looks. Oh how things changed!
And so we went through the motions and the pounds came off. Though we’re not what you’d call thin, we’re a heck of a lot slimmer than we were. We’re feeling great and can honestly say the fun is back!
