One of the loveliest birds to show love is the pigeons. They can be made pet easily by growing and showing love. Growing the pigeons is a hobby for many people and also it has sunk into their tradition. There are a lot of ways for entertainment and earning money with the pigeons. The most popular thing in this zone is the pigeons-racing. In this race, the pigeons are not hurt and the owner gains money and popularity.
Why pigeons are chosen?
One of the very powerful questions in pet-racing is that why do we choose pigeons apart from the other birds. The answer is directly proportional to the nature of the pigeons and their obedience to their master. Pigeons are not harmful birds hurting each other. Instead, pigeons are the oldest domesticated birds. They are being used for delivering letters from and to the army from very old days. Hence pigeons are considered the best choice for the traditional pigeons racing concept.
The race:
This race is not simple as we think. It is not of the usual type where all the pigeons are made to fly from the same place after hearing a gun shot. The race is irrespective of the starting and ending places of the pigeons. Simple physics is used to calculate the speed of the pigeons. The total time of their journey between their start and stop is calculated and then the speeds of the birds are estimated.
The Timing method:
In the old times, special devices such as pigeon clocks were used to calculate the speed of the pigeons. Most of the other devices include rubber rings encapsulated with a special serial number. The rings are tied to the leg of the birds before the beginning of the race. Once the bird reaches home, the owner removes the ring and then calculates the performance of the bird. Now due to the improvisations in the technology, several electronic devices have arrived for calculating the speed and performance in the pigeons racing.
Training:
The owner takes the sole responsibility of training the birds. The racing pigeons, from their 4 weeks of age are trained in a loft which serves as their home for the rest of their lives. Training is initially done to find the places of water and food. Then slowly, the distance of their journey is kept on increasing and ultimately this slow process makes the pigeons ready to race!
Dangers associated with Pigeons racing:
This format of racing contains a fair amount of danger to the birds by external factors. The pigeons are liable to be misdirected if they are not trained well to find the destination. Several other species of birds may hurt the pigeons which serve as a prey to them. The pigeons may get lost on the way without finding the destination. Some birds may not get food and water due to the high competition and may fall dead without reaching the end point.
Choosing the pigeons:
There are only several breeds of pigeons that are very powerful and strong. Only those breeds of pigeons can do the racing. Stronger pigeons which become mature at the young ages must be chosen for the race. Breeds of pigeons such as pure white pigeons, love pigeons are not at all imported for pigeons racing as the race only proves to be harmful for them. Training the pigeons is a slow and difficult process for the owners!
Conclusion:
Several cultures adopt the pigeons-racing is their traditional activity. They are carried out both as a hobby and for winning money. The winning pigeons are treated well by their owners and are prepared with excitement for the next race. Even though more technological advancements have happened, some people stick to their old traditions of pigeon-racing as an interest.
