For students it can be thrilling, for parents in can be a nightmare. Especially paying for it. College is expensive and the is no denying it.
The price of college keeps rising and even in-state public tuition seems like a lot. The average in-state public university tuition is about $7,000 a year. Out of state tuition is somewhere around $11,500. The notoriously pricey private universities usually cost around $27,000. This, of course, doesn’t include things like laundry, parking or World of Warcraft. Despite all this, there are way to help pay for it that make it more affordable.
Grants are the most popular options seeing as how they don’t need to be repaid and they come in all types. The most common grant is the Pell grant, given out by the U.S. government. While funding for the Pell grant has been slashed by Congress, there is still money to go around. It is fairly easy to apply for, simply go to the FAFSA web site and fill out the online forms. There are many other grants available though, including academic, ethnic and state grants.
Scholarships abound as well for those that earn them. There are the obvious academic and athletic scholarships but many others exist as well. Two years at a community college can earn you a transfer scholarship to a state school. Every year scholarships go unclaimed, so they are more then worth investigating.
Then there are the student loans. Most students graduate with upward of $20,000 in student loan debt. It sound horrible, but think of it as an investment in your future. As far as loans go, these aren’t bad. They are low interest, long term and designed to be easy to pay back. After the Air Force try online air force education to continue your future.
Another option that is becoming increasingly popular are online universities. In the last ten years online education has emerged as a great way to save money on school. They cost less and with flexible hours they work around the student’s schedule much easier than traditional classes.
