Ordinary Men, Extraordinary Role Models

Even Disney shows like Hannah Montana that we assume would be fine for our children to watch, portray a girl that has a hard time hearing the word “no” and often dresses much older than her age would warrant. While they do try to put a lesson of some kind in these TV shows, it still sends our children the message that they should look or act like the TV star.
Kids of any era have always needed someone they could look up to and emulate, someone who can set a good example for them to follow. TV stars are certainly popular and are featured lavishly in news and tabloids; this does not make them paragons of morality whom our children should strive to emulate. Kids need an introduction to the everyday heroes like firefighters and police officers.
Police officers and firefighters are just ordinary people, but to anyone who has used their services whether voluntarily or not, will tell you different. To these people, they are heroes. They have dedicated years of their lives to keeping us safe no matter where in the country we live. There efforts have made a huge difference in the lives of many of us.
Several firefighters and police officers look for other ways to serve once they leave the force. Public service is a large part of their nature, which is why they entered into it in the first place. One outlet they find that can use their training and experience to the fullest is in the production of government emergency vehicles. These include trailers like the FEMA trailers so commonly seen after Katrina, SWAT vehicles, mobile crime labs and many others. Our country needs these vehicles to help assist victims of natural or man made disasters.
Certainly a life spent working on the police force or in the fire station is one that is very well spent. The choice they make to create these important emergency vehicles after their tour of duty takes the well-spent life and kicks it up a notch. These activities are more than sufficient to qualify them as heroes. There are many other activities of a public service nature that some are called to as well, they are equally qualified as heroes.
The charitable giving that so many of these individuals have done over the years can without a doubt make a difference in many lives. They support children in Africa, charities in their own communities, and many children’s care and research centers. They may not be able to cure cancer or provide everything someone might need, but they give what they can and encourage everyone they know to do the same.
So, in the end, a good role model does not have to be a TV star or someone who is always popping up with someone else as an “item” in the tabloids. Our police and firefighters have demonstrated that sometimes the role models, the people we should all look up to are those that do their very best every day in the service of others, heroes like police officers and firefighters.
