Military Veterans Face Many Obstacles

However, it may be even more difficult for those currently serving in the Middle East due to the large disconnect with citizens. Here are a few of the major obstacles faced by those who have served our country.
Veterans have a higher level of overall unemployment than the rest of the population. Statistics show that over eleven percent of veterans are currently without a job. The current administration has implemented programs to heal combat this issue. Training programs will be created to help veterans obtain jobs. Companies who hire a veteran will also receive tax incentives.
Some veterans may choose to pursue a higher education but may face difficulty adjusting to academic life. The new Montgomery GI Bill covers one hundred percent of tuition costs if a veteran chooses to attend a public university in their home state. In addition, the bill also offers a housing allowing and a generous stipend for books. In addition, students who attend an online university may also receive a stipend.
Even though some veterans may not be that much older than their classmates; they may be a lot more mature due to their life experience in the army. In some colleges veterans tend to stick to other veterans and feel distant from the rest of the student population.
PTSD is also an issue for many individuals; they feel anxious throughout the day, suffer from nightmares and relive horrendous moments in their mind. Counseling may be needed in order to help them deal with these issues. Others may have impaired hearing due to frequent exposure to loud noises and gunshots.
In addition, there is also a disconnect between the military and the general population. Pew Research Study conducted a study that shows that 84 percent of Veterans feel like civilians don’t fully understand the challenges and difficulties faced by the military. Part of the reason for this is because unlike World War 2 or the Vietnam War, only a small number of Americans served in the military during the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. It’s important the the government as well as colleges offer programs to veterans who may have difficulties adjusting to regular life. They have served our country and deserve help looking for a job, obtaining an education and adjusting to civilian life.
