It’s important to understand that as well as being a concern for millions; dieting is very commercially profitable. The turnover of the weight loss industry is colossal - it amounts to billions of dollars - and so there are plenty of opportunities to profit from our ambitions to be slim.
OK, How Large Has This Got? Whether you personally are obese or not, the chances are you’d be happy to lose some weight. Amazingly, over two-thirds of the US populace are classed as needing weight loss. In other words, 210,000,000… And in fact the figure hovers around 60 per cent in many other places. But we don’t want this to happen!
It’s been revealed that in Britain today, one quarter of all adults are a minimum of 33lbs too heavy (and are therefore classed as obese.) But look at this - Some predictions forecast this figure will rise to 90 percent in forty years time.
Are those figures REALLY set in concrete? Not one of us wants this situation - either for ourselves or others. Easy to follow information is what’s needed. We shouldn’t have to spend a fortune on diet products.
It is commonly understood in medical circles that weight problems lead to other difficulties, including… Liver Disease; High Cholesterol; Osteoarthritis; Cancer; Sleep Apnoea; Type Two Diabetes; High Blood Pressure; Mental Health Problems; Heart Disease; Heart Failure. Weight reduction then isn’t just for cosmetic reasons.
It’s not like we have to be SKINNY - we just have to healthy. It’s about feeling comfortable and finding a weight you can maintain.
We should also teach our kids about good health. We should educate our youngsters from an early age, helping them to form good habits from the start. We’re not the only ones who’ll suffer if we continue doing what we’ve always done. We (and our kids) will get more of what we’ve already got. Which mom and pop wants that?
All of this means we can’t afford to carry on as we are. It’s our duty to learn more about which foods are nutritionally sound. We have no chance of teaching our offspring how to eat well for good health if we don’t know how to do it ourselves. But more than just the next generation - we could help to reverse the obesity trends we were discussing above if we start to get it right now.
