Vision can be affected severely at night. Many people have less than perfect vision or even astigmatism without being aware of it. The problem with astigmatism is that it happens so gradually the sufferers may not even be aware of the fact that they have a problem. It’s a good idea to have your eyes checked frequently in order to make sure that everything is up to par. If you are nearsighted, make sure you wear your prescribed contacts or glasses.
This may seem like common sense but it’s astounding how many drivers seem to think it’s ok to drive around at night with their lights turned off. The worst is when they are speeding or driving on the freeway. They are endangering everyone on the road because we can’t see them coming. All it takes is for someone to make a sudden lane change for an accident to occur. Most modern cars come with the ability to automatically turn the lights on once it’s night time. If your car has this feature, make sure that it is enabled. Don’t turn on your high beams since this can actually blind other cars.
Always be extra aware of pedestrians crossing the street. Slowing down makes a massive difference because it will provide you with more reaction time. Whether we like it or not, we all have to drive at night. Common sense such as turning on the headlights and slow down can go a long way in keeping everyone safe.
