We all want freedom in the literal and metaphorical sense. We are not complete beings without freedom. Sailing helps us relax, as well as pump up on adrenaline. The oceans are vast and looks borderless into the horizon that is why it can make us feel total freedom. Perhaps it’s because we are all used to being limited to streets and roads and are always enclosed inside the four corners of our offices. Day to day tedium and monotony makes us feel like prisoners of our own society.
Before sailing out into the open seas, its essential to learn the basics first. A sailor needs to know every part of the boat by heart and the technicalities of sailing it. Reading the wind and knowing its behavior is a necessary sailor’s skill. Distances in the sea and identifying the direction of travel are also important.
Aside from steering the boat, another important thing about sailing is knowing how to read the weather and how to stay safe at sea. The basics to safety are floating devices, flares, flashlights and first aid kits. Part of safety is knowing how to anticipate the waves and steer amongst facing huge waves. Knowing the mechanics of the boat is necessary to steer it.
You need to dress up as well in order to be a complete sailor. Sailing clothing and sailing gear are parts of being a hobby sailor. The weather could be harsh at sea and you might need protection from it.
Waterproof jackets and inshore warm jackets are important. For footwear, top siders and single mold moods will give you traction from the slippery deck. There are light colored polo shirts on the other hand for friendly weather. Women can wear leggings and men can wear trousers. For bad weather, just put any of those waterproof jackets.
