Shopping for someone else is a precarious matter. No matter how much we love them and think we know them selecting the ideal gift for that ideal someone is a big deal. We know we have finally found the perfect item even though we had to way overspend to get it. We present it to our loved one. He/she hates it. We are shattered once again.

Then the inevitable strikes: You completely blew their budget planning for the month, and now they have to start all over again. Yeah, we’ve been there. That doghouse doesn’t get any more comfortable, no matter how much time you end up spending in it. Which means that sooner or later, an alternative solution is going to have to be found.

One of the wonderful things about living in modern times is the glory that is the worldwide web. We can unleash the power of the internet with just a few short keystrokes. We can visit a Turkish Bazaar, watch people bronze their hides at St. Tropez, watch them run from bulls in Pamplona or join in a celebration of life at a Day of the Dead Festival in Veracruz.

And you can buy something your other half is going to love without ruining their budget planning, which is going to make them a lot happier with you all the way around.

Shopping on the Web - The Basics

This section could also have been titled “Internet Shopping for Dummies” but I thought I would be a little more original (and avoid copyright infringement). We will begin with step one in our elementary internet shopping lesson.

1. Do a little cyber stalking. Let me start by saying your significant other is going to kill you if they find out you’ve been snooping through their browser history, and there’s a very good chance you’re not going to like what you find. (They’re reading that section on local divorce laws for a friend. Honest.) There have to be some sites that they visit over and over again though, and you’ve probably caught a glimpse of at least one of them a time or two. Start there.

2. Keep Checking for Sales. The neat thing about the internet is that if you spend enough time and remain patient you will find what you are looking for and find it on sale somewhere in the vast world of cyberspace.

3. There are always Frequent Flyer Miles. If not miles, there are reward points or whatever it is the site offers you today. It’s always a nice thing to find a site that gives you something back for the time and money you spend there. When you find that site, always start your shopping right there.

4. Use the credit card that gives you something back. If you’re going to use your credit card anyway, why don’t you earn yourself a few extra brownie points? Use the card that gives you reward points for each dollar you spend.

These are the basics for you to start your new program. There will be no quiz but I assume you took down a few notes. Relax knowing that your budget and your special someone are both in capable hands.
