Five Bits Of Advice For A Sane Work-At-Home-Mom Experience

No more need to panic when a child is sick or has a day off from school. If you’re a tad late in the morning, no one cares. If working overtime comes to pass, no worry. All together working from home is a pretty neat thing to do.
Then reality sets in as usual. In the summer when the kids are out of school and insist on doing things with you, working from home becomes an obstacle. No longer can you drop the little darlings off at the sitter while you go about your work. You are called upon constantly to fill sippy cups, make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and changing cartoon channels. You are also the designated driver to take them to the park, Chuck E Cheese and the Fun Zone. These things are not conducive to concentrating on one’s work.
So, you can work after the kids go to bed, yes? No. You can be so tired when at last it’s time to put them to bed, you can barely do the dishes and straighten up until at last it’s your bed time too. Obviously to remain sane, a plan is in order. Below are the five steps to a plan that will work for any work at home mom.
1) Get up earlier than your kids to read and respond to emails. Then don’t even look at your email until lunch time. It is amazing how much time emails can take out of your day. If you are not a morning person, learn how to become one. You need these early morning hours to update social media sites, blogs and do your email.
2) Do breakfast with your kids and take a break at the same time. The main problem with working while kids are about is the attention they demand. They are unable to concentrate on anything for very long making it utterly impossible for you to concentrate on your work. By taking time off to be with your kids and play with them then go back to work for a couple of hours, then the kid break, and so forth throughout the day will strike a nice balance between your work, your kids and you. Your kids won’t be whining that you never spend time with them and you can find some time for uninterrupted work.
3) Don’t be afraid to get a babysitter when you’re in a crunch. Yes, hiring a babysitter to watch your kids when you work from home might feel like it completely defeats the purpose. Guess what? When you’ve got a deadline crawling up and the kids are having one of those days, it doesn’t matter. The best thing you could do for all of you is send them to play with someone else for a few hours. I’ll guarantee you have a friend with kids who’d be willing to trade off babysitting hours with you so they can get a break too.
4) Leave the laptop at home when you’re on vacation. Much like working in an office, it might be a while before you’re able to get some work-free vacation time. If you can, however, leave your laptop at home when you go on vacation. The kids will be happy to have your undivided attention, and less resentment against your job will make it easier for you to work when you’re home.
5) Keep to your established work schedule. Kids are much happier with a schedule they can stick to. If you can let them know that in one hour you will take them on a picnic, and do that, they will be far more willing to cooperate with you and entertain themselves for that hour. This makes it easier for you to do your work and they get to do something fun with you, all of which makes for work at home success. And that is what you wanted when you starting working from home after all.
