If you are considering moving into the massage therapy business, you have a couple of decisions to make. The first one is do you mean the sex industry or do you mean the legitimate massage industry? Obviously, because the sex industry is unregulated, you will not need any qualifications, but you are completely on your own unless someone causes you violence.

If you would like to have a job in the legitimate massage therapy industry, you also have to opt from two choices. Namely, do you want to heal or relax. In general, you will need more qualifications to heal. If you would like to heal, you will probably become employed by a sports club or by a hospital in the physiotherapy section or you can set up your own resort.

If you would rather the relaxation or leisure industry, you will require not so many qualifications and you will almost certainly be working in a spa or massage parlour. The qualifications for both sorts of massage will overlap to some extent, so if money is a problem, you could do the leisure industry course first and move on later on.

Most people that would like a massage just want to be pampered, stroked and oiled. This is relaxing and causes the stresses to drift away. The medical side of the profession takes more understanding as you may be called upon to treat a sports injury or a herniated vertebra and you will have to know how to do that. It is the difference between a first aider and a doctor.

When you have come to those decisions, you still have a couple more to go. The next one is, do you want to specialize in Western or Eastern massage?

If you want to heal, then the massages to look at are Thai and Shiatsu. These variations of massage therapy are fairly rough (Thai more so than Shiatsu) and the client can be stiff for 24-48 hours after the massage. These variations of massage can be likened to physiotherapy and need a high level of knowledge of anatomy and physiology.

If you want to relax your clients, you will be looking at Swedish massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, hot stones and several others. This also takes training and understanding, but you will be dealing with individuals who do not expect you to make them well, just less stressed.

The decisions you take, will define where you are likely to work: massage parlour / spa resort or hospital / hospice. Both alternatives will offer rewarding careers, it only depends on how long you are willing to study and how much you want to earn.

Something that prospective students do not usually take into account is prowess. It takes very little strength to perform a massage for relaxation, because it is so gentle, but if you have to manipulate bones, it takes much strength and will be very tiring - it is like digging the garden all day.
