When considering artificial sweeteners, there is nothing as hotly debated as aspartame. It had been initially authorized by the Food and Drug Administration in 1974 and has since been hounded by criticisms. Critics point out that the original research is erroneous and insufficient. There is also a possible conflict of interest in the authorization according to critics. In 1987 the Government Accountability Office established that the approval process of aspartame truly followed the correct procedure.
