We live in the age of the entrepreneur. That’s not a bad sales pitch. As layoffs are slowly nudging shoppers back to mom and pop shops, and more individuals than ever are stretching their wings and setting out on their own, entrepreneurs are doing a booming business.

Running an online business can, at first, seem a great plan. You don’t even have to leave the house to start work, and you’re not desperately trying to schedule work meetings around all the other things you’re trying to do during the day - getting dinner on the table, changing the baby’s diaper, putting the baby down for a nap, or even spending the odd spare hour or so with the person that you married. Work can be done in your own time, and at a pace that is comfortable for you. You have the advantages that being your own boss brings, without the associated responsibilities.

Many people in our country are either out of work, or getting paid less than they used to. The poverty rate in our country is higher than ever. People everywhere are struggling to get enough income to pay all the bills and support their families. Even the people who still have jobs are finding it hard to make ends meet and generate enough income. Most homes now are no longer able to survive off of just one income. The greatest joy for a parent is spending time with their children. From the first time we hold our baby in our arms it is clear that there will never be anything as important to us as that child. If you’re stepping out into the wide, wonderful world of working from home believing that you’re stumbling into an unprecedented paradise, you’re sadly mistaken-and, if you’re not ready for it, could find yourself floundering before you’ve even had a chance to begin.

The economy today is not like it used to be. People could always earn a little extra money playing the stock market. Some players were so blessed with good fortune that they could leave their jobs and make the Wall Street game their only means to a comfortable living. All they had to do was pick the right stocks. Anyone who has read the financial page lately will realize ’tis folly to even think about this any more.

Stay-cations. Awesome idea, or a terrible one? If you’ve got vacation time coming up but can’t actually squeak out enough time away from ball games, school, scouts and other family obligations, or don’t have enough money set aside to actually skip town (hey, that new transmission’s not going to pay for itself) a stay-cation might be your best option. Your only option.

Working from home is a mother’s dream come true. No more need to panic when a child is sick or has a day off from school. If you’re a tad late in the morning, no one cares. If working overtime comes to pass, no worry. All together working from home is a pretty neat thing to do.

Every day people are using online businesses for their needs and purchases. In fact I’d be willing to bet that almost all of us have bought a gift for someone online or used a company’s website to access their services. We have probably all used ebay.com, amazon.com, or even walmart.com. Shopping online is fast and convenient which is probably why so many people these days are forsaking department stores.
