Bed bugs are a fairly serious cause of sleepless nights. Imagine it Would you be able to sleep if you had tens of blood-sucking beetles in your bed with you? it is a growing problem in the developed world where bed bugs have engineered a big come-back during the last fifteen years.
The ordinary bed bug that attacks human beings are known as Cimex lectularius. They are small, beetle-like creatures that resemble apple pips. They are red to brown, relying on whether they have just fed or not. They are fairly fast runners when they are hungry, but frequently seem sluggish whilst they are full.
Bedbugs do not have standard mouths and teeth, so they do not consume rubbish food. Their mouths are merely two tubes, one to squirt anti-coagulant and analgesic in and one to suck blood out. The analgesic is the reason why most people do not know they are or have been bitten, unless they are allergic to the bugs’ saliva.
Bedbugs like to live near their source of food and hence their name. They often live in ripped mattresses, but they will also live behind skirtings and other woodwork in the bedroom. They do not build nests and will live alone or in a huddle with tens of others.
If you do get a reaction to the bite, you will often see five or six bites in a line. The bites might look like the end of a rubber on a pencil: pink-red a quarter of an inch in diameter. There might also be a swelling, but the bites might not show up for several days, which can make it hard to know where you were bitten, if you are travelling.
It is very difficult to get rid of bed bugs, so you should call in the specialists, if you can afford it. Otherwise, tie a bedbug mattress cover to the bed and use bedbug pillows. Throw out all your clutter and boil-wash or dry clean all your clothing and then seal them in plastic bags,
Repair any rents in your sheets, furniture and wallpaper and cracks in your plaster. Redecorate if you can. Strip everything, even the woodwork and steam-clean behind it. Seal the woodwork back with mastic or silicone. Steam-clean the carpets.
